This page covers the NAS connection options available to administrators in Settings → Storage → Locations. See Storage Locations for the full add/edit flow.
When you add or edit a NAS storage location, the connection fields include a “Connection method” dropdown that controls how Generate reaches your share.

Connection Methods

Server connection

Generate connects directly to the NAS server.

Local mount — localhost

The share is already mounted on the Generate host.

Local mount — remote host (SSH)

Generate reaches a mount on another host over SSH.

Connecting Over SSH

Choose “Local mount — remote host (SSH)” to index a NAS mounted on a separate machine. You’ll provide:
  • Remote host / IP — the machine where the share is mounted
  • SSH port — defaults to 22
  • Mount path on remote host — the path to the mounted share
  • SSH username — the account Generate authenticates as
Remote host SSH connection fields

Authentication Methods

The “Authentication method” dropdown offers three options:
1

Private key (recommended)

Paste your SSH private key in PEM format into the textarea and add an optional passphrase. This is the most secure option.
2

Password

Enter an SSH password. The hint recommends using a dedicated read-only user for this connection.
3

None (server IP allowlist)

No credentials are supplied. A warning notes this is “Only safe when the server restricts SSH access to Generate’s IP.”
Use None (server IP allowlist) only when the remote server explicitly restricts SSH access to Generate’s IP address. Otherwise, prefer a private key.
Whichever method you choose, click Test connection on the wizard’s Connection step before saving. A successful test is required.
